When I first started gardening, I assumed all flowers were grown from seeds. It genuinely surprised me to learn that dahlias grow from tubers. While dahlias can be grown from seed, I quickly learned that doing so is a bit of a gamble. Seed-grown dahlias do not reliably produce the same flower as the parent plant, so you cannot be sure what shape or colour you will get. Growing from tubers, on the other hand, guarantees the variety. If you fall in love with a particular dahlia, tubers are the only way to be sure you will grow that exact flower.
Choosing dahlias is also about understanding the space you have. Smaller pom-pom varieties tend to be much better suited to pots, patios, and smaller gardens. Varieties like Totally Tangerine stay compact and productive without overwhelming their container. Larger types, especially dinner plate dahlias like Café au Lait, are far happier in the ground where they have room to grow and can be properly supported.
Consider your Colours
Colour is something I think about early now. When you are selecting your tubers, it helps to imagine the flowers together in a vase. Sticking to similar tones often creates the most pleasing result. Soft pinks work beautifully together, as do warm reds and oranges. Coppery shades and purples can sometimes clash, so planning a loose colour palette makes arranging far easier later on.
Where to Buy
When it comes to buying tubers, I like to source mine from places I trust. I often order from Farmer Gracy, Dahlia Beach or Sarah Raven, who offers thoughtfully curated collections. These sets are especially helpful if you are just starting out, as the colours are chosen to work well together without you having to overthink it.

You can also find good tubers at local garden centres, particularly in spring. These can be a great option if you want to see what you are buying in person or add a few extras to your collection.
My Favourites
Some of my favourites that I return to each year are Cafe au Lait, Copper Boy, Natalie G. But pom-poms will always be my favourites. They are cheerful, reliable, and endlessly cuttable. New additions to my collection this year include Dikara Superb and Hapet Coppery.
Choosing tubers is the first real decision of the season. It is part practical, part creative, and it sets the tone for everything that follows.
